FAR AWAY

You see the girl who’s walking in the meadow?
She walks there in the springtime
And in the month of May.
If you should ask her why she walks alone there,
She’s waiting for her serviceman
So far, far away.

Now through the park, she’s walking all alone there.
She walks there in the summer,
Just almost every day.
And if you ask her what she’s thinking of there,
She’s thinking of her serviceman
So far, far away.

When autumn comes, she’s walking by the river.
The leaves have started falling
As she walks there each day.
And from her eyes, the tears are also falling.
She’s crying for her serviceman
So far, far away.

It’s Christmas Eve, and she receives a letter.
It’s written by the President
And leaves her in dismay.
She starts to cry before she’s finished reading.
Her love has died in Viet Nam
So far, far away.

Now Spring again has come into the meadow,
And once again the young girl
Is walking there each day.
And yet, no longer does she walk alone there.
She’s walking there with her young child
Who came on Christmas day.
