THE DRIFTER

She was just a drifter going from town to town
When I picked her up in Montreal.
She was out of money and her luck was down.
I asked if there was someone she could call.
She told me she was just a runaway,
Looking for a love she’d yet to find,
Then we drove a while with nothing more to say,
And her words kept running through my mind.

“I’m not just another one-night-stand.
I don’t need you to hold my hand.
I only ask that you understand
And respect the way I feel.
I’m not just another fly-by-night,
And unless you want me to fly out of sight,
You better try to make things right
Or you’ll lose a love that is real.”
