FATHERHOOD

She wakes in the dark, afraid,
Then cries out in the night.
I rush to be there with her and
To chase away the fright.

She reaches out for me in fear
And quickly I am there
To comfort her and give her love
And she is quite aware.

She puts her arms around my neck;
Her love is mine to keep.
Within my arms, she’s safe from harm,
And she falls back to sleep.

I place her back in bed as tears
Of joy roll down my face.
These memories of fatherhood
I know time won’t erase.

I watch her sleeping peacefully
And somewhere deep inside
I feel a sense of happiness
And overwhelming pride.
