THERE WAS A TIME

There was a time when you told me your secrets
And listened as I told you mine.
We’d softly whisper our hopes and our wishes
But that was a happier time.

You used to laugh as we ran hand in hand
Down by the creek when it rained.
That was a time we believed in forever
But now only time has remained.

I’ve got nothing but time here on my mind,
Time that I once spent with you,
And the tears that I cry will never run dry
After what you put me through.
I just wasn’t prepared for you to get scared
And run off and leave me behind.
Now when I think of the past, sometimes I just laugh,
And tell myself there was a time.

There was a time when you told me you loved me
And I said that I loved you, too.
The way that you smiled when I looked in your eyes
Made me believe it was true.
The love that we shared we thought was so special,
The kind you find only in dreams,
But who could have known it would end so abruptly
And just fall apart at the seams?

Everyone thought that we’d end up together,
But they don’t think that anymore.
The heart I once gave you is broken in pieces
And scattered about on the floor.
We used to promise that we’d love each other
Right up to the day we should die.
The worst part of all is that I’ve kept my promise,
Even though you said goodbye.
