SOLITARY MAN

He lived his life in solitude.
He hardly had a friend.
They said that he’d still be alone
When life came to an end.

His parents died when he was young.
He went through life alone.
They sent him to an orphanage
And told him it was home.

He grew to be a quiet man.
He had nothing to say.
When he had turned eighteen he left
To try life his own way.

He got a job and found a home.
He even bought a car.
But no one ever thought that he
Would ever get too far.

He always tried to be polite.
He always wore a smile.
I’m glad that he became my friend,
Though only for a while.

He fell in love with Lori Beth,
But how was she to know?
She didn’t even know his name,
But he still loved her so.

He had to show his love before
He lost his nerve again.
He went to meet her after work,
A confident young man.

He saw her as she crossed the street.
She hadn’t seen the car.
He pushed her to the other side.
He never got that far.

The doctors tried to save his life.
They said he died alone.
He was a solitary man,
And now that man is gone.
