FORGIVE ME

It seems so long ago
That you and I shared our love.
Do you remember the dreams
We used to share together?
I was going to be a writer,
And you would be my inspiration,
Helping me to fulfill my ambitions
And achieve all my goals.
I promised you everything,
Yet I gave almost nothing.
The love I offered so freely
Was hardly enough to compensate
For the demands I placed on you,
And the love you gave willingly
Was taken without gratitude
And abused unmercifully.
I truly did love you,
And I think you loved me,
Or at least I hope you did.
Perhaps it’s better to forget,
But please, before you do,
Forgive me for my love.
