AUDIE MURPHY

When his daddy died, he picked up the slack.
Then as a man, he went to hell and back.
He came home a hero with the Medal of Honor.
When Hollywood called out his name,
He headed west to find his fortune and fame.
If the bad guys came, they were goners.

I remember those Saturdays
How my friends and I would watch the matinees.
There was no doubt that he was our hero.
And I remember the day he died,
I sat alone in my room and cried
Saying “Where have you gone, Audie Murphy?”

When I was still growing up as a kid
I wanted to do all the things he did.
Fighting the bad guys, from cowboys to Germans.
I read the story of his life, and I knew
That there was nothing that I couldn’t do
If I really tried hard and was determined.

He was the hero that I never met,
And that is something I will always regret.
Where have you gone, Audie Murphy?
